We are planning to put together a proposal for a book based on the conference theme, and we would like to invite submissions of papers that were given at the conference, or papers subsequently written that address its theme: Shakespeare and Learning from Early Modernity to Postmodernity. We have had expressions of interest from several publishers, and we will be aiming in the first instance for Ashgate. The editors will be Liam Semler, Kate Flaherty, and Penny Gay.

We’d like 4000-5000 word contributions (include copies of any visuals you might need to include), and British single quote marks, British spelling, internal MLA-style referencing and a Works Cited list, footnotes at bottom of page referring to author name (and page numbers) only, unless short title or year required to distinguish between multiple works by same author.

We can’t guarantee publication or inclusion of every essay submitted as these will depend on our shaping of the collection in the best way possible once all submissions have arrived. Please use the extra words available (over a twenty-minute paper) to really ‘draw out’ the connection of your work to issues of learning and pedagogy, as this will be an important aspect of our pitch to publishers.

Papers should be submitted to penny.gay@sydney.edu.au by 30 September 2010.

Held at Sydney University in the historic Woolley Building, home of the English Department, the 2010 ANZSA conference attracted 100 participants to its two main panel-packed days. There was a final shorter day at Barker College (with about 40 participants), with a focus mostly on issues of teaching Shakespeare in secondary schools. Barker is the ‘industry partner’ with Sydney University for the ARC Linkage Project Shakespeare Reloaded, of which this conference was a major outcome.
